Downtown Pittsburgh is ushering in a new era of accessibility and convenience with the launch of the Pittsburgh Potty initiative—a transformative six-month pilot program designed to address the long-standing need for public restrooms in the heart of the city that has been sought after by advocates for years leading up to this moment. This vital initiative is a clear example of public and private sector collaboration involving the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, and the downtown business and property owner community. The Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership (PDP) will oversee the daily management of two temporary public restroom trailers, providing a much-needed amenity for residents, workers and visitors.
The Pittsburgh Potty initiative has garnered substantial support from both corporate entities and philanthropic organizations, all united in their unwavering commitment to dedicate a minimum of $2 million towards the enhancement of downtown's cleanliness and vibrancy. This investment encompasses a comprehensive range of initiatives, spanning on-street maintenance enhancements, public safety and health outreach efforts, amplified programming, and maintenance initiatives within Mellon and Market Squares.
In less than a month following the announcement of the $2 million investment, tangible progress exists in the form of the physical groundbreaking of these restroom facilities in mid-September – an ADA-accessible one at the Gateway Center T Station Plaza and one at Smithfield St. and Strawberry Way.
Wall-to-Wall Studios, located in the North Side, designed the outside of the restrooms. Inspired by vintage Pittsburgh wallpapers that were likely popular in many bathrooms across the city, the design now presents a modern and welcoming look and feel. These temporary public restrooms are equipped with running water, electricity, lighting, and adjustable heating and cooling systems to accommodate Pittsburgh's varied weather conditions. They will be open seven days a week, from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., and will undergo regular servicing, cleaning and monitoring by the PDP team. Support from Outreach and Public Safety providers from the City, County, and the non-profit community will help to ensure a safe and welcoming environment.
These temporary restrooms serve as a starting point and catalyst for growth while the Building Owner and Managers Association (BOMA) works with the City to establish permanent restroom facilities in downtown Pittsburgh.

These initiatives mark a significant step forward in addressing a pressing issue and ensuring downtown Pittsburgh's revitalization.
